USP Cook Islands Confucius Classroom Wins Award

Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, Dean of FALE, accepts the Confucius Classroom of the Year Award, on behalf of the Cook Islands Confucius Classroom from Honorable Ms LIU Yandong, Chinese Vice-Premier and President of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Council.

The University of the South Pacific (USP)’s Cook Islands Confucius Classroom (CC) is one of the five (5) Confucius Classrooms that received the Confucius Classroom of the Year Award at the 12th Global Confucius Institute Conference at Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province in China from 12-13 December 2017. 

Out of the 1,113 Confucius Classrooms in the world, USP’s Confucius Classroom based in the beautiful Cook Islands received one of the awards for Confucius Classroom of the Year in the Advanced Class category.  The other four winners were Finham Park School, England; Rainbow Confucius Classroom, Republic of Korea; North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, USA; and Askia Mohamed School in Mali.

A total of five hundred and twenty-five (525) Confucius Institutes (CI) and 1,113 Confucius Classrooms have been established worldwide. 

Honorable Ms LIU Yandong, Chinese Vice-Premier and President of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Council, presented the twenty-five (25) awards for the Confucius Institute of the Year and five (5) awards for Confucius Classrooms of the Year before 2,500 delegates, including university presidents and vice chancellors from 140 countries. 

Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) accepted the award on behalf of USP. 

“This award is not only an honour to the Confucius Institute of USP and our Confucius Classrooms, but also an acknowledgement of the support and assistance by USP,” Dr Kedrayate said.

USP Cook Islands Campus Director Rod Dixon congratulated the past and present staff of the USP Cook Islands Confucius Classroom – Ms WANG Xiaoshi, Ms LU Xiaoning and Mr LI Hongfei, whose hard work and dedication had been recognised and rewarded by this prestigious international prize.

The Confucius Classroom at USP Cook Islands was set up in 2015 following a meeting between the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, Hon. Mr Henry Puna, and the President of China, His Excellency Mr XI Jinping. 

Its aim is to prepare Cook Islanders with skills in the language and culture of the region’s most important economic power and increase their future international career prospects.  The Confucius Classroom was established by USP and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT).

During the first two (2) years since its establishment, the Confucius Classroom in the Cook Islands, with the Confucius Institute at Laucala Campus, the Teaching Point at Lautoka Campus and the Confucius Classroom at Emalus Campus achieved a lot in the learning and teaching of the Chinese Language and Culture at USP.   

The global Confucius Institute Conference is held annually and the 2017 theme was Cooperation, Innovation and Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind. 

Director of the CI-USP, Ms Sin Joan Yee, and the Chinese Director Dr YANG Hui, also participated in this conference alongside Dr Kedrayate.  Also in attendance were Ms REN Chunxia, Ms LIU Aijun and Ms CAI Yuanmeng who represented USP’s partner university BUPT.

Speakers at the opening session included Ms LIU Yandong; Dr C. D. Mote, Jr. the Head of the US National Academy of Engineering; Mr Анатолий Тозик the former Vice Premier of Belarus; Dr PENG Long, the President of the Beijing Foreign Studies University and Ms Ghofran Shamseldin Babiker Ali, a blind student majoring in Chinese at the Confucius Institute of the University of Khartoum, Sudan. 

The Confucius Institute at USP had also won the Model Confucius Institute Award in 2016.  The foundation of the new CI building at USP associated with the Model CI-USP Project was laid by His Excellency Major-General (Ret'd) Jioji Konrote, President of Fiji; His Excellency ZHANG Ping, the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji;  and Professor Rajesh Chandra, USP Vice-Chancellor and President in October 2017.
