Financial Boost for Fiji Library Association

Back to News »

Mrs Elizabeth Reade Fong, University Librarian, USP (far right) hands the cheque to Ms Ela Qica, President of FLA (second from right) and Members of the Executive – Liviana Tabalala(VP) (from left), Lavenia Sau (Council Member) and Vilimaina Vakaciwa (Treasurer).

As part of the Library’s activities celebrating the University’s 50th anniversary, the Library made a contribution to the Fiji Library Association (FLA) when it handed over a cheque of FJD5398 on 18 October 2018 at a gathering of Library staff and FLA Executives at the University’s Laucala Campus.

The donation came from the proceeds from a Quiz Night organised by USP Library on 6 September.

Mrs Elizabeth Reade Fong, University Librarian, whilst handing over the cheque said that the funds will contribute towards capacity building of library personnel in academic, community, public, school and special libraries, through the FLA.

Mrs Fong acknowledged the Library’s long standing relationship with FLA and reiterated that USP Library had foundational involvement with FLA with staff from the Library holding executive and council membership positions.

“We have a close relationship, and this relationship is based on the fact that we recognise the value of FLA to library development,” she said.

By virtue of USP Library staff being members of the FLA, Mrs Fong informed the gathering that USP Library is an active participant in Fiji’s National Library Week, been part of national surveys on libraries and contributor to submissions to regional organisations on the value and need for libraries national development and raising literacy and reading levels besides having trained the largest number of library professionals and paraprofessionals.

“We all know that funds do not come easily to FLA, and whatever we do needs funding, so we  thought that a fundraiser quiz night based on the group of six approach, the first of which was held in 1983 by the FLA of which most members were USP Library staff was the way to go.” she said.

Mrs Fong talked about USP Library in its regional setting, and provided an overview of its first official Community Library in Nauru, which was opened during the University’s 86th Council Meeting in May this year.

In recognition of this, the USP Library is contributing titles to the Nauru Community Library to the value of FJD500 from Quiz night funds which totalled $5898.00.

The Librarian thanked the sponsors for their contribution, Ms Judith Titoko for compiling the questions and staff of the Library for their support towards the preparation and hosting of the Quiz Night.

Ms Ela Qica, President of FLA wholeheartedly thanked the USP Library for their financial support and added that the fundraising, which was an excellent effort from the Library, will benefit the members of FLA.

While commenting that FLA is now in a better position to conduct activities for its members, Ms Qica said that there is a need for capacity building in the area of librarianship with a focus on the different types of libraries in Fiji, inclusive of special libraries, school libraries, and community libraries.

She reaffirmed the need for up-skilling current staff of libraries around the country and for the Association to be a platform to lobby with local and external stakeholders on library development and fund generation for the FLA.

She also called on the USP Library staff for their support towards capacity building of professionals as well as para-professionals in the context of the University Librarian’s willingness to make available to the FLA the Library’s Information Research Skills (IRS) training lab that is a work in progress
