Admissions for resuming students have increased by 21%. Resuming students include those that have returned to studies after 3 years or are moving to a higher programme.

The student numbers are expected to increase further as we get close to the beginning of Semester 1 which begins on 1 March.

Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Dr Giulio Masasso Paunga referred to some of these figures when he officially opened the First Year Students Orientation Programme for the School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE) and the School of Business and Management (SBM), this morning, welcoming over 700 students in the jam-packed Australia-Pacific Lecture Theatre at Laucala Campus today.

Dr Paunga said the students should be confident that they have made the right decision to study at USP, a regional and internationally recognised University. He added that USP’s aim is to ensure every student succeeds when embarking on the most exciting journey of their life at the University.

He said that the University has some of the best students from around the Pacific who have studied within SAFE and SBM and have moved on to become great leaders and positive contributors to their communities in the region.

Dr Paunga emphasised that independence and self-discipline is mandatory for any students to be able to reach their goals at the University.

“You all are the chosen ones and have the potential to become leaders in the future,” added Dr Paunga.

He said USP students are set above the rest as they not only have amazing facilities to use, they have high calibre of academic staff to support them in their academic journey to be successful.
Dr Nacanieli Rika, Acting Head of SAFE and Professor Gurmeet Singh, Head of SBM welcomed the students to Laucala Campus.

Dr Rika encouraged students to become pioneers, develop multiple intelligent skills and give back to the University.

He added, “Our goal is to ensure that our students are not only competent in accounting, statistics or finance but also are professional, critical thinkers, creative and ethical. We are not only equipping you to score high, but also to be excellent in all these areas.”

Professor Singh said for any student to be successful in University, they have to manage themselves, their time and choose their company wisely.

He urged students to utilise social media properly and not spend too much time on it and to maximise their time for studies in order to reach their academic goals.

“You have to be punctual to your lectures and tutorials. Also try making use of technologies,” added Professor Singh.
