STEMP and SAGEONS Welcome More Than 800 Students during USP Orientation Week

24 February, 2021: The second day of The University of the South Pacific
’s Orientation Week continued with equal zest and vigour at the Laucala Campus
yesterday as it welcomed new students who have enrolled to study at the University for Semester 1 this year.
The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP)
and School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS)
welcomed more than 800 students for the orientation programme.
Speaking to the students at the Australia-Pacific Lecture Theatre, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Dr Giulio Masasso Paunga said the University, despite the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, had reached an all-time high; a great indication of USP’s profile as the provider of high quality education in the region.

“At the start of every new semester, we look forward to meeting our new students; to help them explore new paths and take advantage of the vast opportunities available at USP, and we hope that you excel in your studies here,” he said.
Dr Paunga added that the University is committed to ensuring that USP delivers an exceptional student experience.

Professor Cirrincione advised the students not to neglect Mathematics as it is the queen of science.
He said the staff of STEMP will be available to assist students when they need assistance.
Professor Cirrincione also said that students now have a choice to pursue a double major in BSc Physics/Engineering and it can be completed in 3 years.

Professor Surendra Prasad said SAGEONS have a wide range of amazing students and very passionate, dedicated & experienced staff from different cultural & educational backgrounds.
“Our teaching, learning and research is very applied and focuses on real-world issues at global, regional and local levels,” he said.
He said that SAGEONS is committed to serving stakeholders with dedication; produce graduates who can readily assume responsibility either in industry, education or government and contribute to the well-being of the region.
Semester 1 begins on 1 March, 2021.
