The University of the South Pacific (USP) Lautoka Campus student, Ms Sainiana Matau was recently awarded a certificate with prize money worth FJD400 for her outstanding performance in credit course in the Chinese language (CN101).

She was the first student from the Campus to be awarded in a ceremony that took place at Lautoka Campus earlier this year.

The CN101 course scholarship was established in Semester 2, 2019 by the Confucius Institute at USP (CI-USP). It rewards students who have achieved first place in the total score of CN101 courses each semester. Since the establishment of the scholarship, a total of six outstanding students have won this award.

Ms Matau was excited and said that it was worth the hard work and sacrifice. She also thanked her Chinese teachers for their guidance.

“The challenges I faced was studying without any laptop and had to make sacrifices staying in school till late hours to get my assignments done,” she said.

She thanked God for the guidance and her grandparents, who have always been there for her.

USP Lautoka Campus Director, Dr Pramila Devi congratulated Ms Matau on her outstanding performance and encouraged students enrolled in CN101 “to work hard and strive for such awards and opportunities”.

The CN101 course aims to introduce students to Chinese language studies. It is primarily designed to train students in Conversational Chinese but will involve other aspects of the language, such as vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading and writing. By the end of the course, students will develop the basic requirements for daily communication in Chinese.
