Taveuni Roots to Scientific Dreams at USP

For many students across the Pacific, The University of the South Pacific (USP) Open Day offers a vital first glimpse into university life. For Harshita Lal, it became a moment of clarity and an experience that deepened her passion for science and reaffirmed her academic journey.

Now pursuing a Master of Science, Lal previously completed a Bachelor of Science and a Graduate Certificate in Education, majoring in mathematics and physics at USP’s School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP).

Growing up on Taveuni in Fiji, Lal didn’t have the opportunity to attend USP Open Day during high school due to the cost of travel. However, during her undergraduate years, she volunteered at the event and saw firsthand the positive impact it had on visiting students.

Reflecting on that experience, the 23-year-old shared how valuable such exposure can be for young people making important decisions about their future.

Now, with her younger sister finishing high school this year and already looking forward to starting at USP, Lal is even more passionate about the importance of initiatives like Open Day in helping students make informed choices.

Lal recalls standout moments like marine biology displays, engineering innovations, and cultural performances. “It was more than an information event, it was a celebration of who we are as a region.”

Reflecting on her own journey, she said that “University has its challenges, but the support and community at USP make it worthwhile.”

To students attending Open Day this year, Lal offered a simple message: “Be curious. Explore. Ask questions. You don’t need to have it all figured out; this is your time to discover what’s possible.”

STEMP brings together the disciplines of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science and Information Systems and Physics.

High school students and those interested in learning more can visit the Laucala, Lautoka and Labasa campuses on Friday, 15 August 2025 for the KPMG USP 2025 Open Day.
