Cultural diversity promoted through the region’s tertiary education provider, The University of the South Pacific (USP) has always thrilled 18-year-old AD College student from Ba, Timaima Mekemeke.
The Year 13 pupil from Soso village was part of her school’s contingent at this year’s USP Lautoka Campus Open Day on September 27.
Mekemeke revealed that she knew students from various cultural backgrounds from around Fiji and the entire South Pacific region converged at USP campuses in Fiji to attain their necessary qualifications.
“Apart from being a top-class tertiary education provider, I have learnt that USP gives students from our region the opportunity to blend and learn more about each other’s cultural practices.”
“At the Open Day today (yesterday), I have seen very entertaining performances by students from different cultural backgrounds and I have been informed that once you become a part of USP as a student you will come across more of such cultural exchange programmes.”
“I also saw various flyers on display at different booths during the Open Day which portrayed images and had success stories of students from our different Pacific Island countries which was very heartwarming.”
“There is no doubt that USP has shaped the future of so many Pacific Islanders and its existence can never be underestimated,” she emphasised.
Mekemeke pointed out that her family ranked USP as a world-renowned prestigious university and always motivated her to work harder to secure a place at the university next year.
She revealed that becoming a student of USP next year will be a dream come true for her and she intends to pursue her studies in either teaching or in the field of geography.
