The EU GCCA+ SUPA held its Fifth Steering Committee and Lesson Learned Meeting in Palau

This year, the European Union Global Climate Change Alliance Plus Scaling Up Pacific Adaptation (GCCA+SUPA) project met recently in Palau for its fifth Steering Committee and Lessons Learned meeting.

A total of 61 people from ten countries came together to discuss, update, and reflect on the project’s lessons learned.

As the region struggles to deal with the negative effects of climate change, that brought together country representatives and partners to discuss progress and chart the best way forward.

The University of the South Pacific Component under the GCCA+ SUPA Programme- focuses on strengthening local stakeholders’ capacity in resilient development.

As a result of diagnostic assessments of training needs in climate and disaster risk, representatives from our ten implementing countries are receiving outreach and awareness-raising activities, as well as accredited training.

Despite the unexpected global COVID pandemic, USP has been able to continue with implementation for the past four years.

Under its project contractual agreement, USP plays a critical role in delivering Output 2 of the project. Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have revised their national and sub-national development plans to include climate change and disaster resilience measures.

As the SUPA project nears its contract completion date of June 2023, progress has been visible in the country of implementation.

The meeting also allowed for the sharing of experiences and lessons learned about the SUPA project’s benefits in terms of scaling up.

The 4.5-year project (2019-2023) is funded with €15 million from the European Union (EU) and implemented by The Pacific Community (SPC) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and USP, in collaboration with the Governments and peoples of Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Tonga and Tuvalu.
