Mere Judith Vere began their professional journey at the Institute of Applied Science (IAS) as a Graduate Assistant (GA) while pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma. During this time, they actively contributed to the work of the Environment Unit, gaining hands-on experience in environmental research and community engagement. Their academic and professional interests are strongly aligned with supporting vulnerable communities facing the impacts of climate change. This includes addressing critical issues such as declining sources of income, reduced food security, decreasing soil fertility, and the need for adaptive livelihood strategies that are responsive to changing environmental conditions.

Driven by a strong belief that researchers can play a vital role in helping communities build resilience, Ms Vere dedicated over five years to the IAS. In their capacity as Technical Officer for the Environment Unit, they contributed to various research projects and community outreach initiatives aimed at improving local adaptation strategies. Their work focused on identifying practical solutions that supported sustainable development and promoted climate resilience among affected populations.

Following their tenure at IAS, Mere Judith Vere joined the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as the National Project Assistant for the project titled “Strengthening of Small-Scale Fisheries in the South Pacific.” In this role, they worked closely with mangrove oyster farmers across Viti Levu and partnered with the Ministry of Fisheries to enhance aquaculture practices. Their responsibilities included technical assistance, stakeholder engagement, and field-level support for small-scale aquaculture producers. Mere Judith Vere played a key role in the successful implementation and conclusion of the project, which culminated in supporting both the FAO Aquaculture Consultant and the Ministry’s Aquaculture Division in developing a comprehensive 5-Year Aquaculture Development Plan. This strategic plan has since contributed to guiding national aquaculture initiatives across Fiji.

In December 2024, upon the completion of their work with FAO, Mere Judith Vere was invited to join the International Centre for Environmental Management (ICEM) as a Socio-Economic Expert. They became part of a multidisciplinary consultancy team working in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) on a national project titled “GGGI Diagnostic Assessment of 12 Coastal Localities in Fiji.” The project, which concluded in May 2025, involved detailed assessments of social and economic vulnerabilities in coastal communities affected by climate and environmental stressors. Ms Vere’s role focused on conducting community consultations, gathering socio-economic data, and providing analytical insights that would inform policy and investment decisions for coastal resilience initiatives in Fiji.

Through these diverse professional experiences, Mere Judith Vere has consistently demonstrated a passion for community-centered development, climate resilience, and sustainable environmental management. Their career reflects a strong commitment to bridging scientific research with real-world application to empower local communities and inform national development strategies.
