PhD Student in Psychology

Admitted Semester 1, 2025.

Alfred Tuikoro Tora has been awarded the prestigious U.S.-Pacific Resilience and Adaptation Fellowship Program (U.S.-PRAFP) Scholarship, a fully funded three-year award to pursue his PhD in Psychology at the University of the South Pacific.

He specializes in Organisational and Indigenous Psychology, focusing on Pasifika cultures, iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) worldviews, and Climate Resilience and Adaptation. His research centers on community-led climate resilience and adaptation, as well as Indigenous economic development, emphasizing equity, cultural sustainability, and decolonial adaptation strategies.

Currently, Alfred’s research explores how iTaukei worldviews—particularly the interconnected concepts of vanua, talanoa, cultural identity, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)—shape climate resilience practices and the sustainability of community-owned businesses in rural Fiji.

His research aims to develop resilient, culturally grounded climate strategies and business models, driven by a strong commitment to collaboration, inclusion, sustainability, and Indigenous self-determination.

Before joining USP, Alfred earned a Master’s degree in Organisational Psychology from the University of London, Birkbeck, and holds two Bachelor’s degrees in Human Resources Management and Public Administration from USP. He has professional experience working with Rotary International, the Global Organisation for Humanitarian Work Psychology (GOHWP), and startups in the United States, contributing to psychometric applications in project team development, employee selection and progression, strategic planning, and leadership development.
