Lia Julie Katalaine Dabea Bogitini

PhD Student in Environmental Science, admitted Semester 1, 2025

Lia Julie Katalaine Dabea Bogitini is a PhD scholar in Environmental Science at the University of the South Pacific. She is the recipient of a prestigious, fully funded three-year U.S.-Pacific

Lia’s research focuses on freshwater nature-based solutions (NbS) and their role in enhancing ecosystem resilience in the context of global climate change. Her work integrates themes of water security, gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI), participatory community engagement, and environmental-economic assessment within small island developing states (SIDS).

Her doctoral project investigates the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of NbS to improve freshwater ecosystem resilience in Fiji. By combining scientific analysis with community co-design and inclusive engagement, the study develops a practical framework to assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts of NbS in tropical island settings.

Her broader aim is to develop a replicable NbS assessment framework tailored to tropical island contexts, inform community-led freshwater governance and policy development in Fiji, and support decision-making related to climate-resilient development and water, sanitation, and hygiene planning, with a strong commitment to inclusivity, equity, sustainability and resilience.

Before commencing her PhD, Lia earned both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of the South Pacific. She has contributed to tertiary education through academic roles at USP and Fiji National University (FNU), supporting the next generation of environmental professionals in Fiji.
