Pacific Languages Unit

The Pacific Languages Unit (PLU) focuses on research, graduate and undergraduate education, and outreach programmes related to the languages of the Pacific. The PLU seeks to:

  • build awareness and appreciation of the linguistic diversity in the Pacific;
  • provide Pacific Islanders with the skills necessary to ensure the survival and development of their languages;
  • teach university credit courses in and about Pacific languages; and
  • conduct research into Pacific languages and the language situation in the region.

Since 1983, the PLU has played a key role in supporting the languages of the region through a variety of conferences, lectures, and consultancy work, as well as the offering of courses.
The PLU is part of the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education.
