My Journey to a Master’s Degree in Information Systems

When I reflect on my journey toward completing a Master’s in Information Systems, one word comes to mind: transformational.

This wasn’t just about earning a qualification—it was about proving to myself that growth is always possible, no matter where you are in life. With over twenty years in the IT field and a rewarding career in education, I have accomplished much professionally. But deep inside, I knew I still had more to learn, more to contribute, and more to inspire—especially as a father, husband, and educator.

At the time, I was working full-time at the University of the South Pacific as a Course Facilitator. At home, I was fulfilling my most cherished roles—husband to my incredible wife, Joyce Deo, and father to our bright and spirited daughter, Katelyn Lal, who is now in Year 5. Balancing academic demands with professional duties and family life was a challenge. There were long nights of study after Katelyn had gone to sleep, early mornings before work, and weekends spent completing assignments rather than resting. But in those moments, I held on to one truth: I was doing this not just for me, but for them.

My Master’s studies allowed me to explore areas I’m passionate about—data and information security, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and predictive analytics in education. These fields are not just technical—they’re critical to the challenges we face today, particularly in the Pacific region. I’m proud to have contributed to international research and publications that can help address these real-world issues.

What made this journey so meaningful wasn’t just the academic success, but how it changed me. I became more focused, more empathetic, and more determined to support the students I teach, many of whom are also juggling work, family, and studies.

Graduating on the 10th of April 2025 was a moment I’ll never forget. It wasn’t just a celebration of personal achievement. It was a tribute to the people who stood by me. Joyce’s unwavering support, encouragement, and understanding kept me grounded, while Katelyn’s curiosity and love reminded me daily of why perseverance matters.

To anyone out there—whether you’re a working professional, a parent, or someone simply wondering if it’s too late to return to study, I want to say this: It’s never too late. You are never too busy to better yourself.

“Even when life demands your time, your heart, and your energy, there is still space to grow. Invest in yourself, believe in your purpose, and let your journey become someone else’s inspiration.”
