Breaking Barriers and Celebrating Diversity: A Milestone Graduation at the University of the South Pacific’s STEMP School

The graduation ceremony held on 5th of September 2024 marked a significant milestone for a diverse and talented group of graduates of the School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Physics (STEMP). The ceremony highlighted the achievements of individuals who have excelled in traditionally male-dominated fields, showcasing a new generation of innovators ready to make an impact in STEMP. Women are now making their mark in these fields, both as students and professionals.

Among the graduates this year, Ms. Silipa Daunilawa Halofaki stands out as a notable example of this shift. As the sole graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Halofaki’s achievement reflects broader changes within the field. Her success underscores the progress being made in breaking down barriers and diversifying representation within engineering disciplines.

The graduation ceremony was a celebration not only of individual achievements but also of the broader transformations occurring within STEMP. This year’s event highlighted the increasing inclusivity and growing recognition of diverse talents in areas that have historically been underrepresented. The presence of a varied group of graduates from different backgrounds underscores a positive trend towards a more balanced and innovative future across all STEMP disciplines.

With a total of 80 graduates from STEMP, the broader university-wide breakdown revealed a significant trend: female graduates overwhelmingly outnumbered their male counterparts, with 702 female graduates compared to 446 male graduates. This impressive representation highlights a significant shift towards gender balance across the university’s programs.

While the increased representation of female graduates is noteworthy, it’s also important to celebrate the achievements of male graduates who have made significant contributions across STEMP. Their hard work and success in obtaining bachelor’s, Postgrad and master’s degrees have also been pivotal in shaping the future of these fields.

STEMP extends its heartfelt congratulations to all graduates. May your achievements inspire continued success and innovation in your careers. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors and look forward to the remarkable contributions you will make.
