About Engineers Fiji

Engineers Fiji – formerly known as the Fiji Institution of Engineers – is the nationally recognized body for engineering professionals in Fiji. Established in 1970, it operates under the guidance of an eleven-member Council, appointed annually by its members.

Main Objective:
To promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in Fiji and the Pacific region.

Project Objectives

Main Goal:
To strengthen R&I ecosystems in the Pacific region and address the impact of climate change, through mapping, stakeholder engagement, and traditional knowledge integration.

Project Aim 1 – Mapping and Diagnosis of National Ecosystems

  • Objective 1.1: Identify key stakeholders in the R&I ecosystem (completed)
  • Objective 1.2: Conduct interviews with local stakeholders (in progress)
  • Objective 1.3: Create a participatory map outlining locations, capacities, expectations, and relationships of stakeholders (in progress)

Project Aim 2 – Analyzing Climate Change Knowledge

  • Objective 2.1: Identify regional stakeholders and projects related to Climate Change Impact (CCI) and map both local and traditional knowledge (in progress)

 Project Implementation

Partner 5 – Engineers Fiji’s Role
Engineers Fiji is responsible for the public sector mapping and diagnosis. We focus on engaging government departments and agencies, using a participatory approach to map out ecosystems and establish management plans.

Key Activities:

  1. Define target ecosystems (forest, river, marine, etc.)
  2. Identify involved public sector agencies
  3. Facilitate stakeholder workshops for mapping resources and threats
  4. Analyze collected data and summarize threats and possible interventions
  5. Work with stakeholders to design sustainable management plans
  6. Provide training sessions on ecosystem importance and conservation strategies
  7. Monitor and evaluate ecosystem conditions and stakeholder engagement

Special Focus: Inclusion of local communities and traditional knowledge is a core part of this process to ensure ownership, sustainability, and cultural integration in the outcomes.

  • Initial delays in fund transfers (1st payment received)
  • Project assistant appointed to manage implementation
  • Limited access to data for activities in other regional Pacific Island countries

Despite these challenges, the team continues progressing actively to complete the project within the given timeline.
