The Right to Information (RTI), also referred to as Freedom of Information……
Project funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives and implemented by University of the South Pacific (USP)
Background
Right to Information (RTI), commonly known as Freedom of Information and Access to Information, is a basic and fundamental human right in the globalising world. Every country must proactively provide all information in a timely manner to its citizens and the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). In Tuvalu, barriers such as low awareness, limited digital literacy, and traditional gender roles disproportionately affect women, journalists, and young girls, preventing them from exercising their right to information.
To address these challenges, the RTI in Tuvalu will focus on empowering women, journalists, and youth by providing them with digital tools and awareness programs to improve their access to information. By leveraging innovative digital solutions (such as a mobile app, website, and RTI e-course), the project aims to make information readily accessible, thus fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.
This project aims to bridge these gaps by improving access to information, fostering transparency, and equipping women and journalists with the knowledge and tools they need to fight corruption.
The University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) are key partners in this project, working together to promote transparency and anti-corruption measures through the Right to Information (RTI) framework in Tuvalu. CFLI provides modest funding for small-scale, high-impact projects across more than 120 countries eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA), with a focus on governance, human rights, and anti-corruption.
Through this partnership, CFLI’s resources are directed toward fostering gender equality, youth empowerment, and media engagement in Tuvalu, while USP brings its expertise in education, community outreach, and digital innovation to implement effective RTI tools. The collaboration leverages CFLI’s financial support and USP’s regional knowledge and presence, ensuring that the project is tailored to meet Tuvalu’s specific needs and capable of generating sustainable, long-term impacts.
