TRIP 2: RTI Tuvalu Team Concludes Second Visit with Strong Community Engagement
Funafuti, Tuvalu – January 2025
The Right to Information (RTI) Tuvalu team has successfully wrapped up its second visit to Tuvalu, carrying out a week-long campaign to promote transparency, good governance and access to information.
The visit, which took place from January 11–16, 2025, focused on raising awareness about the RTI Competition, engaging communities, and strengthening partnerships with local institutions.
The project funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) and implemented by the University of the South Pacific (USP), the RTI project aims to empower citizens, especially women, youth and journalists, with the knowledge and tools needed to access and use public information effectively.
During the visit, the RTI team conducted an extensive outreach campaign across Funafuti, engaging with students, government officials, women’s groups and the media to encourage participation in the competition.
The team visited local churches, using the platform to discuss the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.
A bike outreach campaign allowed them to reach remote communities, where they distributed flyers and explained how residents could take part in the competition.
Media played a key role in the initiative, with the team working closely with the Tuvalu Broadcasting Corporation (TVBC) to broadcast RTI awareness messages through television, radio and social media.
Government officials, including Hon. Simon Kofe (Minister for Communications) and the Ministry of Education and IT Department representatives, expressed their support for the RTI initiative.
A dedicated outreach session was also held for women and youth groups, providing hands-on guidance for creating competition entries.
As the RTI project continues to grow, its impact on Tuvaluan society is becoming increasingly evident encouraging citizens to play an active role in demanding transparency, holding leaders accountable and exercising their right to information.
