COVID-19 reaffirms the importance of education

Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pacific needs new skills in order to adapt to and navigate our new norm.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Semester 2, 2022 enrolment is now open in all its campuses including Samoa.

USP’s Samoa Campus Director Tootoooleaava Dr. Fanaafi Aiono-Le Tagaloa said although COVID has changed the world irrevocably, it has also cemented the long-held belief that “Education is the key to Success”.

Dr. Aiono-Le Tagaloa added that a major part of the Samoan culture and life revolves around family – Aiga, which is not limited to parents and siblings but includes our huge extended families, churches, and of course our many Faasinomaga.

She explained that when a student leaves Samoa to study, they leave this tremendous structure of support, encouragement, guidance and protection adding that if they can study from home, they can have the world at their fingertips through a USP education and would have found the best of both worlds.

Dr. Aiono-Le Tagaloa said the USP Samoa Campus offers support whether face to face, online, or other flexible modes, to suit their students’ needs.

Vice Chancellor and President of USP Professor Pal Ahluwalia said the journey for any student is not always going to be smooth sailing, however, the Vice Chancellor assured that USP will guide students and equip them to face and overcome each challenge, enriching their experience and adding to their life skills to complement their academic achievements.

Semester 2 applications are now open, and students can visit the Alafua Campus or Savaii Centre or email samoa@usp.ac.fj to find out more about the programmes on offer.

With many families facing financial difficulties, USP has also introduced financial programmes to assist its students.

For instance, private students at USP wishing to continue their studies in Semester 2 can now apply and take advantage of the USP Bursary Scheme.

The Bursary Scheme provides financial assistance to approximately 250 – 300 undergraduate or postgraduate level students across all its member countries.

USP is also offering the following fee discounts:

  • 10 per cent discount for full fee payment by 26 August 2022; and
  • 5 per cent discount for full fee payment by 9 September 2022.

Classes for semester 2, 2022 will begin from the 15th of August.
