The theme “Shaping Pacific Futures” came to life at The University of the South Pacific (USP) Nauru Campus Open Day last Friday.
The annual event designed to inspire the next generation of leaders, provided hundreds of high school students with a dynamic platform to explore academic programmes, interact with staff, and envision their future.
For many, like Susannah Abourke, the experience was a profound step forward. The 18-year-old Head Girl of Nauru Secondary School was among those who found the day impactful.
“Attending the USP Open Day was such an exciting experience for me,” Susannah said.
“It opened my eyes to the many opportunities available after high school and motivated me to think more seriously about my future career.”
“Talking with alumni and current students gave me confidence that I, too, can achieve my goals if I work hard. It was both fun and inspiring, and I’m grateful I was able to be part of it.”
Acting Campus Director, Felicity Canon added that the event was a celebration of potential and opportunities.
“To our young and future students, today is all about you—it’s about your dreams, your potential, and the exciting journey that lies ahead,” she said.
“Whether you are just beginning to explore your future path, or already have a goal in mind, today is your chance to discover what’s possible through education.”
Canon added that choosing to study at USP means more than just earning a qualification.
“You’re joining a proud legacy,” she added.
“You’re stepping into a story that began decades ago, a story of resilience, growth, and service to our people.”
The event was honoured by the presence of Nauru’s Minister for Education, Honourable Asterio Appi, who attended as the chief guest.
Students present toured the campus, engaged with staff, and discovered the wide range of programmes on offer, gaining a firsthand look at the USP life through its different exhibitions on display.
