USP Tonga Campus Opens Doors to Future Changemakers

The University of the South Pacific (USP) Tonga Campus welcomed hundreds of enthusiastic secondary school students and teachers from across the Kingdom to its 2025 Open Day, held under the inspiring theme “Serving the Pacific.”

The annual event showcased USP’s diverse academic programmes and reaffirmed the University’s long-standing commitment to regional education and leadership development.

USP Tonga Campus Director, Dr Robin Havea, expressed his gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event.

“Our Open Day was a resounding success, and I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, including the USPSA Executives and students,” he said.

“Months of careful planning and a fortunate spell of fine weather helped everything come together seamlessly. We were delighted with the outstanding turnout, perhaps boosted by our decision, for the first time, not to cap the number of invited students.”

He also acknowledged the efforts of the media partners.

New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga, Matthew Howell, joined the celebrations and witnessed first-hand the energy and enthusiasm of Tonga’s youth.

“Events like this are a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in our youth, the future leaders of Tonga and the Blue Pacific,” he said.

“New Zealand is proud to be a founding member of USP and remains committed to supporting the potential of Pacific regional education. When Pacific youth thrive, the whole region thrives.”

Student Ilisapesi Tukutukunga shared her experience of the day.

“It was inspiring to learn first-hand about the programmes and learning support services that USP offers. There are programmes to suit everyone’s academic ambitions,” she said.

The Open Day featured interactive displays, campus tours and career-focused information sessions, giving students a genuine taste of university life and the breadth of study options available.

Adding a touch of local pride, the Cultural Show welcomed former Miss Heilala, Racheal Guttenbeil, as a distinguished guest. The performance celebrated Tonga’s rich heritage through the art of dance and highlighted the creativity and diversity of USP students.

USP Tonga Campus once again demonstrated its role as a hub of learning and innovation, preparing Tonga’s young people to lead and serve the Pacific.
