USP Lautoka Campus and Empower Pacific champion student well-being

Mental health disorders, stress, and alcohol and substance abuse are among the major challenges confronting students during the critical phases of their educational journey. Tertiary students are particularly vulnerable to such pressures, which can negatively affect both academic performance and overall well-being.

To address these issues, The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Lautoka Campus, in collaboration with Empower Pacific, organised a workshop for students and staff that sought to raise awareness about mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, and effective stress management strategies.

Sangeeta Ram, Coordinator of USP Pacific TAFE Lautoka Campus, highlighted the University’s commitment to supporting students during exam periods.

“USP is committed to providing some relief to our students before their examinations through destressing workshops like this. The abuse of alcohol, other drugs, and mental health disorders is a major challenge facing the student population of this generation,” Ram said.

Vika Bete, General Counsellor and Programs Manager from Empower Pacific, noted that the workshop would assist students in planning their daily routines ahead of final examinations.

“Addiction to alcohol, cigarettes, and harmful drugs has become very common among students nowadays.” She reminded students that alcohol abuse can lead to poor memory, as well as damage to the brain and liver.

“Being young, students have the opportunity to control or quit harmful habits now before becoming fully addicted. It is important to stand your ground, say no to anyone offering drugs, and control the temptation to consume alcohol and kava,” she emphasised.

Reshmi Singh, Senior Counsellor from Empower Pacific, highlighted the role of stress in contributing to a range of personal and health-related problems.

“Students need to learn to prioritise their work and avoid getting involved in unwarranted activities or situations,” Singh said.

“There will also be situations in life which you will not be able to avoid, so it is important to find positive ways of coping and identify people you can reach out to. Talking to people with a positive mindset can take away a lot of stress, and this is where Empower Pacific plays a vital role in our society,” she added.

This workshop supports USP Lautoka Campus’s ongoing efforts to create a supportive environment for students, equipping them with the knowledge and strategies to maintain their mental and physical well-being.
