USP Confucius Institute graduates 154 students - 22 Nov 2019 03:26:33 pm
A total of 154 students of The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Confucius Institute (CI) graduated (Social Courses) in the second semester of 2019. Forty-seven of these were awarded in a special ceremony at the Laucala Campus on 1 November 2019.
Sixteen students graduated from USP’s Lautoka Campus; sixty-six from Emalus Campus in Vanuatu and twenty-five from the Cook Islands Campus.
Ms Joan Yee, Local Director CI congratulated the graduating students saying their hard work and sacrifice had paid off in learning Chinese language and culture.

A total of 62 Post Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (PGCTT) graduates received their certificates in a first of its kind as part of the programme’s accreditation with United Kingdom-based Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA).
The awards ceremony, held at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus on 19 November 2019, marked the first results of this endeavor.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) achieved premier ranking for Propensity to Recommend, Good Teachers, Programme Content, Language Support, Employability, and Health Care through a global survey on student satisfaction led by members of International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality (THE – ICE).
Jane Gentle, General Manager and Company Secretary, THE-ICE, stated in a statement that member institutions achieved first place ranking in almost half of the categories.

“Ethnic Relations in Fiji: Threats and Opportunities”, the Dialogue Fiji Publication was launched on 15 November at The University of the South Pacific (USP) by Dialogue Fiji chairman Nemani Buresova.

Staff, students and families of The University of the South Pacific (USP) turned up in numbers for their free measles vaccination at the Campus Life Health & Wellness Centre in Laucala on 15 November 2019.
In response to the current measles outbreak in some parts of Fiji, USP’s Campus Life section organised the free vaccination drive on campus in partnership with the Ministry of Health & Medical Services.
Approximately 1000 staff, students and their families were able to get vaccinated on campus during the day.

Solomon Islands new Minister for Education Honourable John Moffat Fugui has commended The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOEd) for its work in the region.
Hon Fugui met Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of the SOEd when he attended the 89th USP Council meeting on the 6th-7th of November at Suva’s Holiday Inn.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) took part in the Korea International Renewable Energy Conference (KIREC) held in Seoul, South Korea from 23rd -25th October 2019.
KIREC2019 was the 8th conference in the IREC series organised by the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st century (REN21), a think tank and global multi-stakeholder network which is focused on renewable energy policy.

Pacific involvement in IPCC urged - 15 Nov 2019 11:32:48 am
“There is an urge for Pacific island countries to engage with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or IPCC,” says academic, Dr Morgan Wairiu.
Dr Wairiu is acting director at the University of the South Pacific’s Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) and lead author of the IPCC 1.5 degrees special report which was published in October 2018.
He is also the coordinating lead author for the Small Islands chapter of the IPCC working group 2 (AR6).

The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted an informative National Dialogue on Substance Abuse on 13 November at the AusAid Lecture Theatre, USP.
Leadership Fiji in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and National Security held the National Dialogue to address and raise awareness on issues surrounding drugs and substance abuse. The event titled “Substance Abuse- Let’s Talk About it! Finding a Fijian Solution!” brought together various stakeholders who are involved in trying to combat drugs and its abuse.
