In May 2017 Unita Ramswarup lost her husband to kidney failure. The mother of four was soon forced into a dark world without her soul partner and could not imagine how she would survive. For 43 year old Michelle Muavesi coming back to further her studies at University after 20 years was a tough decision to make, however it proved to be one of the best decisions she had made after she graduated in Professional Diploma in Business Management. A senior academic from The University of the South Pacific (USP) was the lead author of biodiversity chapters of the recently-released landmark United Nations report, warning that damage to the planet is so dire that people’s health will be increasingly threatened unless urgent action is taken. Produced by 250 scientists and experts from more than 70 countries, Professor Jeremy Hills was the only contributor from the Pacific Islands of one of “the most comprehensive and rigorous assessment on the state of the environment completed by the UN”. ... The University of the South Pacific (USP) graduated its first PhD in Climate Change on 21 March 2019, as part of the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE). Mr Jale Samuwai’s thesis titled “will the tide of climate finance finally turn in our favour? A total of 2026 students graduated from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) first Laucala Graduation over a two-day ceremony from 21 – 22 March 2019. On 21 March, a total of 1300 students graduated in a two part ceremony; 387 students graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE), 333 students graduated from the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) and 580 were awarded certificates and diplomas from the Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) in the afternoon session. A total of fifty-two (52) graduates of The University of the South Pacific (USP) were awarded gold medals in a special ceremony at the Laucala Campus on 19 March 2019. During his welcome address, Professor Pal Ahluwalia, the Vice-Chancellor and President, said the gold medalists had excelled in their respective studies and it was a pleasure to recognise their hard work and achievements. The University of the South Pacific (USP) has expressed support for a proposed university research school project to be conducted by the University of New Caledonia and the University of French Polynesia. This follows a brief meeting between Professor Pal Ahluwalia, Vice-Chancellor & President of USP and His Excellency Sujiro Seam, French Ambassador to Fiji, at USP’s Laucala Campus on 15 March 2019.
