For Twenty-year-old Melaia Rolomanu Vitukawalu, the journey to further her education has been one of both sacrifice and anticipation.
Leaving her family behind in Macuata, the Kadavu native arrived in Suva, Fiji, to continue her Bachelor of Geospatial Science at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP), Laucala Campus.
Vitukawalu had previously begun her studies at the USP Labasa campus earlier this year, but as her coursework advanced, she yearned to continue studies complemented by specialised resources.
Vitukawalu shared that her passion for Geospatial Science stemmed from her upbringing amidst the natural beauty of Macuata on Fiji’s northern division.
“Back in Macuata, where I was raised for the majority of my life, we have beautiful sunsets, the blue lagoon and the never-ending sea. Being surrounded by that strengthened my interest further to pursue Geospatial Science.”

While excited for the new environment, she remained grounded in her primary goal.
Vitukawalu shared that she was also aware of the financial commitment her parents had made, which fuelled her determination to excel.
“I am excited for what lies ahead this semester, but the goal is to focus on my school work and ensure my grades improve. It is not easy. As a private student, my parents had to sacrifice for my fees and my accommodation.”
Her advice to other young people pursuing their education is the importance of self-belief and faith.
“The key is to study hard and remember the sacrifices that our parents have made in order to be here. I need to believe in myself a bit more and pray a lot.”
Melaia Vitukawalu is one of many students embarking on a transformative educational journey this semester at USP.
