Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with double majors in Economics and Management and Public Administration at The University of the South Pacific (USP), the 22-year-old from Ambae Island demonstrates how education can empower as well as shape individuals.
Tariuvi’s decision to transfer from Emalus Campus, Vanuatu to Laucala Campus, Fiji was based on leveraging more resources at the University to successfully complete her remaining studies.
“I felt that I needed more support for my degree which is why I made the move to transfer campuses,” she stated.
Despite a demanding course schedule, Tariuvi is enthusiastic about completing her second-year studies at a new campus.
“I am particularly interested in my Economics units this semester, as I believe they will provide valuable insights into addressing the challenges most of us face back home,” shared Tariuvi.
While focused on academics this semester, she hopes to participate in extracurricular activities around campus during her leisure time.
The Lycée Catholique de Montmarte alumna revealed that she grew up in a French-speaking family and she is the only one out of her siblings to fully switch to the English language at university level.
“I always have people asking me if it was a difficult switch for me but it wasn’t, since English was one of our core subjects from Year 7 back home,” she explained.
“It has been quite easy for me to switch language after all these years and understanding my lectures as well as tutorials hasn’t created any difficulties for me.”
With a strong desire to contribute to her country’s development, Tariuvi aspires to become a resourceful leader who embodies accountability, transparency and strong values. She hopes to make the most of her education here at USP to join the ongoing efforts to create a brighter future for Vanuatu.
“Regular class attendance, tutorial participation and consistent reading are the small things that build up towards your success in university,” Tariuvi emphasised while offering advice to her fellow peers.
Yvanna Tariuvi’s journey from Ambae Island of Vanuatu to Fiji is a testament to her ambition and dedication towards her studies.
Her academic pursuit coupled together with her strong commitment to serving her country make her an inspiration to young people across the nation.
