USP Emalus Campus Open Day: Nurturing Future Leaders Through Engaging Debate

Encouraging students to engage with critical topics relevant to national development is essential for fostering knowledgeable and informed future leaders.

This principle was at the heart of The University of the South Pacific (USP) Open Day, hosted at the Emalus Campus in Vanuatu on Friday, August 16, 2024.

In his welcome address, Dr Monovi Amani, a lecturer at the Emalus Campus, urged students to seize the opportunity to “see, hear, witness, and most importantly, be part of a world-class learning institution.”

He emphasised the significance of choosing the right educational institution, stating, “The choice of a learning institution is of great importance, and USP, as a prestigious regional university, continues to provide Pacific Island countries with a pathway to modern and advanced learning”.

The event attracted over 460 students from 12 schools across Vanuatu, who participated in various activities designed to give them a glimpse of university life.

These activities not only highlighted USP’s academic offerings but also showcased its unique position as a melting pot of cross-cultural experiences, with students from all 12 member countries proudly representing their nations through vibrant cultural performances.

The highlight of the day, however, was the school debate. Prospective university students took centre stage to engage in a lively discussion on Vanuatu’s recent referendum regarding the introduction of the Integrity Law.

The debate showcased well-researched arguments on how this law could potentially unite the country, enhance political stability, and support development growth.

The USP Emalus Campus Open Day was a resounding success, reflecting the university’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders by providing them with the knowledge and experiences necessary to contribute meaningfully to their communities and beyond.
