The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted the inaugural Western Indigenous Relationship Exchange (WIRE) programme at the Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji on 26-27 June 2025.
The programme is a groundbreaking indigenous mobility initiative designed to foster deeper understanding and collaboration on critical indigenous issues and brings together partners from the University of Kansas, the University of Wyoming, and Montana State University.
The visit was coordinated by the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), USP’s longest-standing partner with a remarkable 40-year history of collaboration. Following their impactful time in Fiji, the contingent will continue their journey to New Zealand, with participation from the University of Waikato and Auckland University.
The WIRE programme is set to delve into a comprehensive range of fundamental indigenous topics, offering participants invaluable insights into the Pacific’s rich heritage and contemporary challenges:
- Pacific History & Narratives: Exploring the rich history and evolving narratives of Pacific peoples and their enduring traditions.
- Pacific Worlds: Gaining in-depth cultural and cross-cultural awareness of the diverse Pacific region and its many peoples.
- Development Issues in the Pacific: Analysing the complex economic, social, and political development challenges confronting the region.
- Role of Key Ministries in Indigenous Development: Examining the crucial contributions of government bodies, including the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, and the pivotal role of the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) in the Indigenous Land System and Ownership.
- Sustainable Land Development & Livelihoods: Exploring strategies for supporting sustainable livelihoods within Indigenous communities, with a focus on leveraging land and ocean resources.
- Indigenous Research: Participating in a Talanoa Session dedicated to Traditional Research Frameworks, led by esteemed Indigenous researchers.
- Communicating Sustainability: Discussing effective communication and educational approaches to address pressing sustainability challenges.
- Integrating Indigenous Knowledge & Conservation: Bridging the wisdom of traditional knowledge with modern conservation practices for a holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
- Indigenous Psychology: Understanding how indigenous culture plays a vital role in mitigating mental health issues.
- Traditional Governance & Culture: An immersive exploration of the Great Council of Chiefs, traditional ceremonies, Indigenous leadership frameworks in Fiji, and the vibrant Traditional Fijian Meke.
The WIRE programme underscores USP’s commitment to promoting indigenous knowledge, fostering international partnerships, and contributing to the sustainable development and cultural preservation of the Pacific region.
