The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted a Traditional iTaukei Welcome Ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Fiji to formally welcome its incoming Chancellor, His Majesty King Tupou VI of Tonga, and Her Majesty Queen Nanasipauʻu.
The ceremony reflected USP’s deep respect for Pacific heritage, culture, and leadership, while also strengthening bonds with its regional communities. His Majesty’s role as Chancellor underscored the University’s enduring partnership with its 12 member countries in advancing higher education, research, and sustainable development across the Pacific.
The traditional welcome was complemented by cultural performances, traditional rituals, and remarks from USP leadership. Staff and students witnessed a vibrant fusion of Pacific heritage and academic excellence, reinforcing USP’s identity as a truly regional institution that honours and uplifts the diverse cultures of its member countries.

“It was truly an honour to welcome His Majesty King Tupou VI. This was the first time our King visited in his role as Chancellor, and we were excited and proud. Events like this make Tongans feel at home while in Fiji, and we were grateful for the opportunity to share our culture with the world. With USP’s graduation underway this week, we were ready to perform, celebrate our traditions, and create an unforgettable experience for our classmates and the wider Pacific community.”

Melania Valemasi, a Land Management and Geography student, added:
“It was an honour to represent our iTaukei culture at this special event. Celebrating our traditions alongside the wider Pacific community reminded us of the richness of our heritage. My studies at USP have given me a deeper understanding of the relationship between our land, our communities, and our culture, and I was proud to share that through moments like this.”

The event also provided a platform to showcase USP’s contributions to Pacific development, particularly in the areas of education, climate action, sustainability, and community engagement.
