Our Stories Start With You

The University of the South Pacific is the leading institution of higher education in the Pacific Islands region. Founded in 1968, USP has expanded the intellectual horizons of generations of students from its 12 member countries—Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu—and responsible for the formation of a regional elite of educated Pacific Islanders who can be found in key positions in government and commerce across the region.

The unique aspect of being at USP is the people, the students, the tutors, the lecturers and the lifelong friends that make the journey at university a story worth telling.

In the Pacific, storytelling is a way of passing down information to the next generation. It is how we learn our culture, observe traditional protocols, and teach our children.

“Our People, Our Stories” is not just about storytelling but also about learning from the experiences of others. Sharing personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs offers valuable insights that can inspire, educate, and help others take that next step in their academic journey.

Pacific families are mostly extended, and one story from USP alumni is enough to inspire young people across an entire generation to follow in those footsteps.

Over the 50 years of its existence, USP has welcomed and educated countless families across the Pacific.

“Our People, Our Stories” is a small introduction to some of our USP families, and we hope their stories will inspire more families to join us.

This is a time to seek out and celebrate the diverse achievements and contributions of USP graduates and staff, enhancing the institution’s reputation and attracting prospective students.

In the coming months, we will showcase inspiring stories of individuals who have positively influenced their families, communities, and the global community, owing to their education and experiences at USP.

“Our People, Our Stories” embodies the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and recognises the communal settings and values of the Pacific region, where it takes many people to provide a safe, healthy environment for children where they are given the resources to develop, flourish, and realise their hopes and dreams.

Through shared experiences, our stories preserve ancient tales, traditions, and culture, treasuring the wisdom passed down through generations.

Family is at the core of our communities, serving as the foundation of our Pacific Island way of life, bringing us joy and unity.

Guided by the successes of previous generations, we embrace new horizons and embark on the next phase of our journey at the University of the South Pacific.
