In 2017, Fiji chairs the global climate change negotiations at the United Nations, the first time a Pacific island country has done so. Fiji has vowed to lead the global climate talks on behalf of all Pacific island countries.
Global efforts to tackle climate change stand at a crossroads. The 2015 Paris Agreement was widely seen as a diplomatic breakthrough. The agreement represents a shared political commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the UNFCCC member states must now finalise the ‘rule-book’ that accompanies the Paris Agreement and put forward ambitious pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Action must be taken quickly, before catastrophic rates of warming are ‘locked in’.
Pacific leaders have, for decades, understood climate change as a problem of international relations. Through concerted diplomatic strategies, island ambassadors and political leaders have proposed, and gained support for, global solutions intended to tackle climate change. 2017 presents a new opportunity for Pacific diplomacy. Can Pacific island countries convince major emittors to accept the scale of action required to begin the shift towards a zero-emissions global economy?
This seminar series explores the past, and prospects, for Pacific climate diplomacy. Throughout 2017 a range of speakers – including academics, diplomats, political leaders, scientists, community and civil society representatives – will deliver public seminars that explore the Pacific’s role in the global climate negotiations. It is organised by the School of Government, Development and International Affairs (SGDIA) in collaboration with PaCE-SD
