IAEA Director-General visits USP

 

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President Regional Campuses & Global Engagement Dr Giulio Masasso Tu’ikolongahau Pāunga received a courtesy visit from the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, on Friday, 8 July 2022.

Mr Grossi also held brief discussions with Dr Paunga where there were suggestions to have more collaborations between the IAEA and USP.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Paunga said this visit would open up training and capacity building opportunities in various sectors.

He also gave the IAEA Director-General a brief introduction of the University and its legacy.

Dr Paunga also highlighted USP’s achievements and its goals for the near future.

Mr Grossi said he had wanted to visit USP personally to express his interest in developing concrete areas of cooperation and some environmental and marine protection projects that could benefit both institutions.

He added that IAEA carries out projects for their member states in the context of their technical cooperation programme and that they are all sustained by working with academic institutions in every country.

Mr Grossi also highlighted that he firmly believes that coming to Fiji and trying to take their bilateral cooperation treaty to another level. He said, “working with USP would not only be desirable but truly indispensable.”
