Second-year civil engineering student wins worldwide science quiz

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) second-year civil engineering student has brought honor to the School of Information, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics (STEMP) by winning a global science quiz in early September 2021.

Kaveet Koushal Naiker is pursuing his degree in Bachelor of Civil Engineering. He competed with 500 other science and engineering students from universities worldwide to win a $1500 prize in the iSmart Quiz Competition, the first organised by the iEngineering Group. iEngineering Group specialises in innovative engineering products and services. On 1 August, the first quiz round took place, during which the top 15 students from the level 1 quiz were chosen. Final winners for 2021 were announced in the second phase of assessment via Live Online Quiz.

The 21-year-old, originally from Solove, Wailevu, Labasa, said that he is proud because winning the International level quiz competition was a prestigious moment.

“I was excited, but more than that, I was surprised when I was  informed that I won the quiz out of all the students that participated. This was a huge achievement for me,” he added.

Kaveet stated that one of the difficulties he had during the quiz was researching the various branches of engineering.

“To overcome the challenges, I attempted a few online quizzes and took the help of the students of other fields whenever I got stuck in any question.”

Kaveet’s biggest motivation is the support he gets from his family and relatives, as they always pushed him forward and brought the best out of him.

“I would like to dedicate my success to the Almighty God and my parents for guiding me and showing me the right path. Not forgetting my lecturers and tutors,” he added.
