The University of the South Pacific (USP) has developed a free massive open online course (MOOC) on Quality Physical Education for Pacific teachers who want to encourage their pupils towards being active and healthy.
The course is focused on the fundamentals of physical education to help students become more active and healthy. Recognising the diversity within classrooms across the Pacific, the course also includes specific content on inclusive physical education with tips for teachers on adapting and modifying to suit the learning needs of every student.
Deputy Head (Learning, Teaching and Quality) of the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education, Dr Rosiana Lagi said students from all over the region would take the course online getting a preview of the new programme.
“This is the second time we are offering this course. However, this course is part of the new Physical Education major that will be offered beginning this semester,” Dr Lagi said.
She went on to say the course was tailored to the Pacific experience of human movement and culture exploring traditional sports and games.
She added the course would create awareness and interest, consequently increasing the number of enrolments into the programme.
The online course is for five weeks and will include at least four hours of learning materials, practical activities, and resources that participants can complete in their own time each week.
Each week the course will focus on a critical topic designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills on quality physical education to help teachers across the Pacific provide inclusive, flexible and interactive lessons.
Participants will have access to professional mentors from the Pacific Islands with a range of experience across physical education, physical activity, and sports. Participants will also be able to connect and interact with each other through the online platform to discuss, share, and learn together.
