Fiji’s relationship with China is at its strongest yet, Acting Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad told guests at the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in Suva over the weekend.
Prof Prasad said the partnership has stood the test of time and continues to be defined by respect for sovereignty, mutual prosperity, and collaboration in areas of shared interest.
“Fiji’s longstanding and enduring relationship with the People’s Republic of China has stood the test of time and continues to remain firm and resolute,” he said.
He highlighted milestone visits by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2014 and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka earlier this year as symbols of deepening ties.
Prof Prasad said, over the decades, Fijians have benefitted from China’s support in infrastructure, education, health, and other socio-economic areas, particularly through the Belt and Road framework.
He noted the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project as the latest example of cooperation that will strengthen connectivity and drive economic growth in the Northern Division.
He also acknowledged the Chinese community’s contribution to Fiji’s development and culture, describing them as an integral part of the nation’s story for more than a century.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian said, over the past 50 years, bilateral trade between China and Fiji has soared from $2.3 million to $534m in 2024, making China Fiji’s third-largest trading partner.
Mr Jian highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding on Belt and Road cooperation signed by the two countries with the objective to accelerate the alignment of both development strategies.
“China will continue to provide support to Fiji within its capacity, increase imports of high-quality Fijian products, and encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Fiji.
“We will work with the Fijian people to tackle the challenges of climate change, and help Fiji better leverage its resource, environmental, and human strengths to achieve sustainable development and shared prosperity,” said Mr Jian.
He highlighted Fiji’s achievements in the global arena.
“Active in regional and international affairs, Fiji is a pioneering force in peacekeeping and climate action. Hon. Prime Minister Rabuka’s vision of an ‘Ocean of Peace’ has become a public good for the region and the world at large. With exceptional wisdom and action, Fiji has set an outstanding example of a small nation with a big voice on the global stage.”
The event was held at Albert Park in Suva to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and to mark the historic milestone of 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji.
