More USP Lautoka Staff Graduate

Devika Ram, Nishant Singh and Upendra Kumar

USP encourages its staff to constantly upgrade their qualifications and skills not only to make them more competent in their profession but also to give them the opportunity to advance in their career.

Its Lautoka Campus staff have been benefiting from and taking advantage of the studying opportunity provided by the university.

Achieving a USP qualification for the first time was an immensely proud moment for Lautoka Campus’ long serving staff Upendra Kumar.

A Despatch Clerk based at USP Lautoka, Kumar graduated with colleagues Devika Ram and Nishant Reddy on 23 March 2018.

Kumar graduated with Professional Diploma in Business Management (PDBM), a one year cohort-based course that ended in February which he pursued as a private student.

“I feel accomplished and proud of my achievements and I am grateful for my wife for motivating me and supporting me through my learning journey,” he said.  “I would like to also thank our Campus Director Dr. Pramila Devi and my colleagues for their kind support.”

Though he had been working for USP for almost 24 years, Kumar had never committed to upgrading his qualification until last year when he enrolled in this PDBM program offered through USP’s Pacific TAFE.

Kumar said this program had taught him a lot and made him more knowledgeable and thus confident to explore better career options.  He said age should not be a barrier to learning and though he made a late start he is now confident to take more courses in the future.

Like Kumar, it was also the first USP graduation for Reddy, a Cashier at Lautoka Campus. Reddy also graduated with a Certificate in PDBM, however his course was semester based, which he did over 3 semesters.

Reddy said he took the course to upgrade his qualification so he could qualify for better job positions.  He said it was an amazing feeling to receive a Diploma from USP and he is now motivated to complete his Diploma in Management studies.

It was a third USP graduation for Ms. Ram, who graduated with Masters in Commerce (MCOM) majoring in Management and Public Administration that she completed in Semester 2, 2017.

Ms. Ram, who is a Student Officer at USP Lautoka, said it was a big moment for her as she had overcome lots of challenges to achieve this level of qualification.  “It was a challenging and stressful experience for me as I had to juggle my studies with a full-time job and family commitment, however the struggles were totally worth this achievement,” said an elated Ms. Ram.

“I thank my family, especially my husband for his patience, understanding and support.  I am also very grateful to Dr. Devi for her motivation and guidance and USP for giving us this incredible opportunity to study and upgrade our qualifications.”

Ms. Ram said studying with USP had given her personal and professional enrichment. She said it had broadened her knowledge and understanding in many aspects.
