Samoa Campus

Unveiling of Campus Name Change on Friday, 22 January 2021.

Official Remarks by the Minister of Education Sports and Culture (MESC), Afioga Loau Solamalemalo Keneti Sio for the Unveiling of “The Samoa Campus Sign” at the University of the South Pacific.

Rev. Apimeleki Qiliho; Your Excellency, Dr. Trevor Matheson; Members of the Advisory Committee; USP staff members; Ladies and Gentlemen.

Today’s event marks yet another milestone in the History of the University of the South Pacific in Samoa, as we celebrate a change in the name of this great Campus from “The School of Agriculture and Food Technology, Alafua Campus (SAFT-Alafua Campus,” to “The University of the South Pacific Samoa Campus (USP-Samoa Campus)”. The name-change was and is deemed necessary to reflect the evolution in course offerings and programs from the Campus.

The first seeds of this change were planted in the Samoa Parliament Legislative Assembly on March 19, 2019, when a Bill for the name change was introduced as the “University of the South Pacific School of Agriculture Amendment Bill, 2019”. Discussions about the Bill were held between the Samoa Government and the then Campus leadership team—Ms Seulgee Samuelu who was Officer in Charge, and Assoc. Prof. Siaka Diarra, the then Head of School of SAFT. Further discussions on the Bill were held during a USP-Alafua Campus Advisory Committee meeting, before it was proposed to the USP Senior Management Team.

At all levels of discussion, it was unanimously agreed that the name-change was needed to accurately echo the changes to the courses and programmes offer from the Campus. More importantly, it was also consistent with the recent restructure of the USP which has seen SAFT become part of SAGEONS –the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean and Natural Sciences. At the 90th Meeting of Council on the 18th and 19th of November, 2020, the name change was approved, more than a year after it was first proposed.

That this change is made more than 50 years after the University was established is testimonial of the University’s dynamic adaptability and flexibility, allowing it to shift with the times when and where it is needed. So as we celebrate this momentous event, let us also celebrate our University’s ability to adapt to changes as it steers our Pacific forward in shaping its future.

With those words, I declare the new name of our Campus— “The University of the South Pacific Samoa Campus”—effective from today.

Thank you!
