The University of the South Pacific (USP) was set up in 1968 to educate students from its 12 member countries namely Cook Islands, Republic of Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Students come to USP with different level of mathematics skills, thus the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) has developed an online support tool known as the Online Mathematics Diagnostic Tool (OMDT) to help bridge any mathematics gap that students may have. This is very important for the University because most of its courses have some percentage of mathematics.
The OMDT has two parts, the online test and the online remedial. The test consist of 40 multiple choice questions taken from five topics namely: Algebra, Functions, Differentiation, Integration and Statistics & Probability. The duration for the test is 75 minutes. Immediately after the test students receive their test results. Based on the test results students will be directed to the appropriate remedial. If the test results indicate that the remedial is not needed then students are required to fill in the students feedback questionnaire before they can receive their certificate, badge and transcript.
The remedial is free. It consist of simplified notes, examples, exercises, videos and quizzes. The remedial is contextualised and it consist of games where students have to collect coins if they answer the quiz questions correctly and lose the coins if they do not answer the quiz questions correctly. After completing the remedial students will take a retest before they are directed to fill in the remedial feedback questionnaire and receive their certificate, badge and transcript.
OMDT Courses
There are two OMDT courses: (i) OMDT1 This course is compulsory for students enrolled in the science programmes listed below. To attempt this course science students have to login with their USP username and password. Bachelor of Arts Major Disciplines Computing Science Information Systems Mathematics Bachelor of Commerce Major Disciplines Information System Bachelor of Science Major Disciplines Biology Chemistry Computing Science Electrical/Electronic Engineering Geospatial Science Information Systems Mathematics Physics Prescribed Programmes Bachelor of Arts (Environmental Management) Bachelor of Arts (Marine Management) Bachelor of Geospatial Science Bachelor of Science (Marine Science) Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) Accredited Programmes Bachelor of Engineering (IPENZ), (Electrical & Electronics), (Mechanical) Bachelor of Net Centric Computing (ACS) Bachelor of Software Engineering (ACS)
(ii) OMDT2 This course is compulsory for nonscience students or students enrolled in programmes not given in the list for OMDT1. To attempt this course nonscience students have to login with their USP username and password.
There is a third version of the OMDT known as OMDT3. OMDT3 is open to the general public. Anyone can login to the OMDT3 via social authentication, i.e. through their facebook or gmail account. High school students are strongly encouraged to take the OMDT3 for their own benefit.
Follow the instructions in the OMDT user manual and go to omdt.usp.ac.fj to access the OMDT.
All Bachelor Degree students are required to attempt the FREE OMDT in their first year of studies. If students do not take the OMDT they will not be allowed to register for their 200 level courses in their second year. Science students are required to take the OMDT1 and nonscience students are required to take the OMDT2.
Students need to follow the instructions in the OMDT user manual and go to omdt.usp.ac.fj to access the OMDT.
For new students in Semester 1 2019, the OMDT opens on 7th January, 2019.

The OMDT will be open throughout the year. However, students are encouraged to take the OMDT as early as possible before Semester 1, 2019 lecture begins, so it does not add to their study workload during the semester and also because the purpose of the OMDT is to bridge mathematics gaps before students begin their degree studies.
Note that there are 5 test modules and five remedial modules. If students fail any of the test module they will be required to take its appropriate remedial module before they take the retest. Each remedial module takes around 10 hours to complete. Students will know that they have completed the OMDT after viewing their OMDT certificate.
The OMDT is a support tool and its not counted as part of the 100 level course requirement.
For queries regarding the OMDT, email: omdt(at)usp.ac.fj
2018 students are reminded to complete the OMDT as soon as possible to avoid delay in registration in 2019

 The test is FREE.
The OMDT is COMPULSORY to all new Bachelor Degree Students. These students are required to take the OMDT before they can progress to their 2nd year studies.
For new students in Semester 1 2019, the OMDT opens on 7th January, 2019.
Students can take the test from their personal computers, smart phones and other mobile devices provided there is good internet connectivity. However, it is recommended that they take the test from the USP ITS labs because of good internet connectivity.
Regional students can take the test from the ITS labs at any regional campuses.
 Students can use the calculator.
To attempt the OMDT students need to go to omdt.usp.ac.fj and login with their USP user name and password and click on OMDT: Online Mathematics Diagnostic Tool 1 or 2.
Once students successfully login to the OMDT, they are require to read the test instructions, watch the videos and read the procedures for the test and only then will the test open up.
There are 5 sections or modules to the test and students are required to complete each module within 15 minutes and complete the entire test within 1 hour, 15 minutes. When the time is up for each section, it will shut down and students are strongly advised to continue to the next section. Students will receive their test marks based on the number of questions they have completed.
It is important that students begin the test only when they are ready to commit 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The test marks does NOT contribute to any kind of coursework for any course students are enrolled in.
Students are required to fill in the OMDT test questionnaire in order to receive their marks, certificate, transcript and badge. The tool will know that students have completed the OMDT only after they have viewed their certificate.
If the test results has identified that students need to take the remedial, then they will receive their certificate, transcript and badge only after completing the remedial, taking the retest and completing the remedial questionnaire.
If the test results have indicated that students need to take the remedial, then it is COMPULSORY for them to complete the remedial.
 The remedial is FREE.
Completing the remedial means completing all the modules recommended to the student.
Each remedial module takes around 10 hours to complete.
Within each remedial module are exercises known as Test Yourself. Students gain coins depending on the number of times they attempt the exercises. At the end of each remedial module the coins are converted to marks and the marks determine if students have passed the particular remedial module or not. Students need to achieve 50% to pass a particular remedial module. If students fail a particular remedial module then they are required to do it again. If they still fail after two attempts then they are allowed to continue.
After completing the remedial, the retest opens up to students.
After attempting the retest, students are required to fill in the remedial questionnaire as a condition for receiving their certificate, transcript and badge.
Upon completion of the OMDT, students receive a certificate based on the USP grading mark ranges. The students will be awarded with a pdf ecopy of the certificate. There are four categories of certificates based on the performance of the students: Distinction
 Credit
 Pass
 Participation
Students also receive a transcript which shows the grades obtained for each test module or retest. The students will be awarded with a pdf ecopy of the transcript.
Moreover, badges are also awarded to students upon completion of the OMDT. The badges created in Moodle are displayed on the students profile.
Students who complete the OMDT, go into the draw to win attractive prizes such as smart phones, book vouches, recharge cards and many more.
