Katy receives prize for outstanding overall results in climate change

Katy Lee Miller was awarded a prize for the Most Outstanding Overall results in Postgraduate Diploma of Climate Change during the Pacific Centre for Environment & Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) graduation ceremony at the FMF Gymnasium.

Katy said she was ecstatic to receive her Postgraduate Diploma in Climate Change from The University of the South Pacific (USP). Her courses were mainly conducted online, giving her flexibility while working full-time.

“A thorough understanding of the courses was made possible by the professors’ weekly online zoom sessions,” she added.

Katy stated that climate change was an existential threat to the planet.

“The most important thing you can do is talk about it with your friends and family,” she said.

“I believe we are all inextricably linked to the sea and that the health of our ocean is critical to all life on Earth. Growing up in Fiji, surrounded by the ocean and nature, instilled a strong desire to protect our planet.”

She added that students should always research to fully comprehend the topic’s full scope and that change began with dialogue.

“As a climate change student, I believe that sharing knowledge about climate change and its severe consequences is critical for raising awareness about our planet’s climate’s past, present, and future,” Katy said.

“I hope we can help put this planet on a sustainable path for our next generation of ocean warriors, climate leaders, and environmental stewards.”

She added that there were no exams due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only additional assignments and weekly quizzes.

“Being organised is an important skill for meeting assignment deadlines, and having group assignments to share ideas is also helpful,” she said.

Katy described her family and husband as an incredible support network.

“This achievement is for my beautiful daughter; she will learn to love every being and creature on this Earth from a young age,” she added.

For Katy, the Laucala Campus Library served as an excellent venue for their assignment group meetings before the pandemic lockdown.
