USP Online Open Week gets an Overwhelming Response on its First Day

The University of the South Pacific (USP) Online Open Week that opened from 9.00am this morning and began with much enthusiasm with its GetUSPReady tagline.

Judging from the visits we have had just today, we are very excited with the response and are assured of a great week ahead.  Adi Cakobau School, Swami Vivekananda College, Suva Sangam College, Lautoka Muslim College and Vishnu Deo Memorial College participated with over 500 students in our zoom and chat sessions.  Schools are still signing up for the zoom and chat sessions to facilitate their students to access information and hold chats with our staff and students.

In addition, live sessions on social media channels reached more than 3000 audiences within an hour of going live.  The live sessions will be broadcast daily this week through our USP Facebook pages from 12.00pm to 1.00pm where our Faculty reps will be providing information on respective programmes and courses.

USP’s annual Open Day is a significant event in its calendar.  While some campuses in our member countries were able to hold their Open Day, due to social gathering restrictions in place, USP Fiji Campuses could not hold its Open Day in its usual format.

We therefore changed the format to hold an Online Open Week.  Apart from prospective students in Fiji, this gives us an opportunity to widen our audience base and allow students in all our member countries and beyond, who will soon be finishing high school to start tertiary education, to access the same information.

The Online Open Week also provides an opportunity for working people who are intending to study at USP in Semester 1, 2021 to visit our website and access information at leisure, in the evenings after work.  Due to Covid-19 pandemic there are many people who may have lost their jobs or are working reduced hours who are looking at re-skilling or looking for new opportunities.

Another advantage of the Online Open Week is that one can revisit our various pages of information and videos various times throughout the week.  The information can be shared and discussed with teachers, parents and peers.  We have online chats available from 10.00am to 11.00am, 2.00pm to 3.00pm and 4.00pm to 5.00pm to answer any questions that people may have on their course of study, application process and support services such as such as scholarships, mentoring, buddy system, inclusivity for disabilities and recreational activities.

The Online Open Week is solely aimed at ensuring that prospective students are made fully aware of the different programmes and courses available at The University of the South Pacific to enable them to make sound decisions regarding their future studies and career paths.

In his welcome message for the Online Open Week, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Pal Ahluwalia said, “we are a top 50 University in Oceania and we are developing into global rankings this year.  We will be applying to become one of the ranked Universities in the world and we are confident that when you get to USP, you will be studying at the premier university where virtually all our key leaders in the region are our graduates.”

Over 2000 prior registrations were received since registration opened and the response that we received from schools and individuals was overwhelming.  This gave the University further encouragement to ensure that we meet the demand. From today (5 October) one can access our Online Open Week platform through the link provided on our website www.usp.ac.fjor go direct to the link https://onlineopenweek.usp.ac.fj/.   Registrations are no longer required.
