The School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE) partnered with The Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) to organise an awareness session and membership drive for first-year accounting students at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus on Friday 12th March.

As part of this event, the FIA conducted a guest lecture for over 500 students enrolled in AF101 – Introduction to Accounting and Financial Management 1.

The lecture provided an overview of the Accounting Profession in Fiji. It was presented by Mr Tarlochan Singh and Mr Rajeshwar Singh who are members of the FIA Council as well as alumni of USP and SAFE.

Mr Tarlochan Singh is the current FIA Vice-President and holds the position of General Manager Finance and Compliance at Sun Insurance.

Mr Rajeshwar Singh is a former FIA Vice-President and holds the role of Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of the South Pacific.

The Head of SAFE, Dr Nacanieli Rika said “the exposure provided through the lecture and the benefits of FIA membership will provide students a strong platform for their future careers along with an enhanced appreciation of the vital role played by the Institute.”

Following the lecture, the FIA held a voluntary membership drive for the students led by FIA Executive Director Ms Beverly Seeto, another alumna of USP and SAFE.

Ms Seeto said close to 50 students took advantage of the opportunity to sign-up as student members of the Institute.

As FIA members, these students can freely access professional resources and information about international issues and developments in the accounting profession, including the most recent versions of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
