1. What is your home country?

3. What programme(s) did you graduate in and in which year?
Graduated with a Bachelor of Agriculture in 1980

4. What was your most memorable moment as a student?
Enjoyed the cross-cultural environment, but it was small size population of students so we practically knew everyone.

5. Describe your experience while studying at USP.
Good environment to study

6. What was your greatest achievement while studying at USP?
President of the Alafua USP Studentís Association

7. After graduating from USP, what were some of the highlights of your career (past work experience and current employment?
First Tuvaluan to localize the post of Director of Agriculture, Government of Tuvalu; first Tuvaluan to work for the South Pacific Commission now called the Pacific Community; and Prime Minister (3 times) of Tuvalu.

8. How do you think USP helped you in your career?
Made me better understand and accept different people with different cultures, prepared me with the basic management skills to become good manager when working with the people and last but not the least gave the qualification in order to advance my career.

9. After graduating from USP, what has been your greatest achievement?
Being Prime Minister of my country for 3 different times totaling just over 8 years altogether.

10. What inspires you and why?
Having exposed to other countries such as Fiji and Vanuatu in my days as a student and learned that life is full of adventures and challenges; and from this inspiration, wanted to offer my service to my people not only of my own country Tuvalu but also to the region at large.

11. What advice would you give to current and future students of USP?
Focus on your studies, and aim at serving your nation, your community, and your family to the best of your ability and in doing so do it in sincerity and dedication in all honesty and commitment.

12. Please share your top three tips that you think are most important for our current students or recent graduates that will help them when starting out on their career paths.

  • Believe and have faith in God
  • Respect other people and their respective cultures
  • Whatever tasks you do, do them to the best of your ability and as your service to God Almighty in all honesty and commitment

13. What has your involvement been with the University since you graduated? 
I was fortunate to have received a graduate award for 3 years to do my PhD in Developing Studies from 2010 to 2012 but deferred my studies in 2012 due to family commitment.  As a PhD candidate, I have taught and tutored some undergraduate and graduate courses, in the Faculty of Business and Economics.
