Our Counselling Service

Counselling is a talking therapy that gives you space to explore challenges causing concern or distress. At USP, our Counselling Psychologists provide a safe and supportive environment where you can reflect, gain new perspectives, and consider options for change. We won’t tell you what to do, but we will listen and work with you to find a way forward.

Common reasons students and staff seek counselling include:

  • Study, work, and career pressures
  • Transitioning from school to university
  • Adjusting to new cultural or social environments
  • Stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Grief, loss, or trauma
  • Relationship or communication difficulties
  • Identity concerns
  • Financial stress or peer pressure

What to Expect

A counselling consultation is 50 minutes, either in person or online. You’ll be welcomed, invited to share what brought you to counselling, and encouraged to focus on the concern most important to you. Your Counselling Psychologist will listen, ask clarifying questions, and may suggest strategies or techniques to help, depending on your needs.

After your consultation, you may wish to reflect on what was discussed, try out strategies, or simply notice new ways of thinking about your situation.

Booking Appointments

We offer one consultation at a time, but you can return as often as you find it helpful. Some people attend once, others several times over weeks or months. If you cannot attend, please cancel early so the space can be offered to someone else.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Your counselling consultations are private and do not appear on academic or medical records. Counselling Psychologists may review their work with external supervisors to ensure quality, but your details remain confidential. Exceptions are made only when there are serious concerns about safety or when required by law.
