Bio

Jacqueline Ryle is Senior Lecturer in Sociology. She has a PhD in Social Anthropology (SOAS, University of London 2001), an MSc in Social Anthropology (UCL, University of London 1992), BSc in Anthropology (University of Copenhagen, Denmark 1991) and Examinata Artium in Cultural Sociology (University of Copenhagen 1989). She is English, born in Cyprus and grew up in England and Denmark. Her pre-university background includes extensive travels in South East Asia, employment in Red Cross refugee centres in Denmark, and working as assistant to the Women in Development Coordinator in DANIDA, the Danish national Development agency. She has taught Anthropology at University of Copenhagen and at Pacific Regional Seminary, Suva and, within the National Council of Churches in Denmark, done advocacy work on climate change, the environment, faith and ethics. She has fieldwork experience from Cyprus, Australia, Denmark and England. Her PhD and Postdoctoral research (1993 – 2005) on Christianity, tradition and politics in Fiji, based on extensive fieldwork in different churches and communities, was published in the monograph, My God, My Land – Interwoven Paths of Christianity and Tradition in Fiji (Ashgate 2010).
