As Pacific countries strive to reform educational systems and enhance student outcomes, school leadership emerges as a priority on education policy agendas.
As such, the Graduate Certificate of School Leadership (GCSL) program Cohort 3 was officially launched in Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia on February 5.
The program is designed and delivered by the Institute of Education, The University of the South Pacific.
Amid the presence of esteemed guests and education officials, including Deputy Director Mr Jason Reiong and Guest of Honor, Dr Margarita Cholemay, the event garnered enthusiasm and anticipation from both in-person and virtual attendees.
Dr Cholemay, in her remarks, highlighted the significance of the GCSL program in equipping school leaders with essential skills and knowledge vital for effect
“Leadership skills are very important and needed for a school’s smooth operation,” she said.
“I support this program and am looking forward to hearing from this cohort and their experiences.”
Dr Tepora Wright, the team leader of the Professional Development and Learning (PDL) team, extended a warm welcome to the participants on behalf of Dr Seu’ula Johansson-Fua, the Director of the Institute of Education.
Dr Wright reiterated the commitment to providing comprehensive support throughout the participants’ GCSL journey.
The GCSL program focuses on essential leadership domains, including planning professional development, school leadership, school management, enhancing the teaching and learning environment, and fostering community partnerships. This program is contextualised to the country it is delivered in.
Contextualising the program to the country ensures that participants receive relevant and tailored training that aligns with the specific needs and realities of Chuuk schools. This approach acknowledges the importance of localised solutions in driving educational improvement.
Participants, including Ambrose Raymond, an Instructional Support Coordinator, and Darleen Joshua, a school principal, shared their motivations and expectations for joining the GCSL program.
Mr Raymond expressed his eagerness to explore new horizons and acquire leadership skills.
“I think the GCSL program will open my eyes to different approaches and ideas to support teachers and principals in their areas of needs.
“It will also show me effective approaches and fresh ideas to bring the island communities closer to their schools,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Ms Joshua sought guidance from the programme in managing her school effectively as a new principal.
“I learned from other students who have been taking this program that it is a great program and we learned so many things that will enhance our ability to lead schools.
“So, from hearing things about this program, I expected to learn more activities and ideas that could help me as a school principal,” she said.
GCSL Coordinator Mr Peseti Vea expressed gratitude to the Director of the Chuuk Department of Education and other staff members for their invaluable support in organising the orientation program.
Mr Vea emphasised the importance of teamwork and encouraged participants to seek assistance whenever faced with challenges, highlighting the collaborative ethos of the program.
As the third cohort sets sail on this transformative journey, anticipation runs high for the positive impact it will have on Chuuk’s educational landscape, nurturing a generation of competent and visionary school leaders set to lead their institutions towards greater success.
