Institute of Education (IoE)

About Us

The Institute of Education (IoE) was established to serve the educational needs of the twelve member states of the University through its developmental role in education, provision of in-service training programmes, research, advisory services, and consultancies. IoE now has the advantage of 48 years of experience in providing educational services to the region, developing close links with Ministries/Departments of Education, teacher training institutions, other education service organisations, regional, and international organisations. Through these partnerships and experiences, it has developed expertise in Pacific education that has enabled it to provide services to the region that are high quality, relevant, appropriate, flexible, responsive, and cost-effective.

Professional Development and Learning (PDL)

The role of the Professional Development and Learning (PDL) Programme is to deliver the Institute’s qualifications programmes. Currently PDL delivers the two programmes offered by the IoE:

1. The Graduate Certificate in School Leadership (GCSL)

2. The Professional Certificate in Education Policy and Planning (PCEPP).

Research & Development

As USP’s main institute for educational research, IoE’s R&D Programme’s primary vision is not only focused on being the regional hub for educational research, but to also advocate for research practice that   is appropriate and relevant to each of the Pacific Island nations that it serves. The R&D’s approach to working in the region is based on a design-based approach, where we genuinely listen to the needs and requests of our national agencies and work from there.

Waka Overview

The IOE’s Waka Publications programme is committed to building children’s literacy through publishing books and literacy support materials and resources in vernacular languages, English, and dual language publications for children from pre-school age through to secondary school ages, and up to tertiary level. IoE has been publishing children’s books since 1976, in over 8 Pacific languages. The Institute develops the talents of local writers and artists, and adds the expertise of trained USP educators and linguists to create each of its books.

Vaka Pasifiki Education Overview

The Vaka Pasifiki Education Conference (VPEC) is normally a biennial conference organised by the Institute of Education (IOE), The University of the South Pacific (USP) in partnership with the host country from one of the USP twelve member countries.
