COP26 – Virtual Information Session

The University of the South Pacific (USP) through the European Union funded Intra-ACP GCCA+ Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change and Resilience Building (PACRES) programme in collaboration with the Australia Pacific Climate Alumni Network organised a two hour virtual information session to support USP students in developing an informed application in response to the call for student participants at COP26.

The session was divided in two one-hour sets, on 24 June 2021 and 2 July 2021. A total of 38 participants, 21 women and 17 men, from five Pacific Islands Countries (Fiji, PNG, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu) participated in the information session.

The information session aimed at supporting prospective student applicants to prepare thorough applications for the PACRES USP call for student participants at COP 26. The programme covered the following topics: application requirements, demonstrating knowledge of COP26 processes, Pacific Small Islands States (PSIDS) priorities for COP26, and information on how to put together a good curriculum vitae. Participants also had the opportunity to hear from experts on their perspectives of developed and developing countries during negotitations. Dr. Jale Samuwai from Oxfam shared his experience at COP21, 2015 Paris, France and Mr. Exsley Taloiburi from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) provided an overview of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and COP processes.
