Guadalcanal Provincial Planning Committee Meeting, Solomon Islands.

The Provincial Planning Committee Meeting was held on 10th October 2022 at the Harmony Conference Room in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The meeting was attended by representatives from Guadalcanal Provincial Government, chairpersons, and ward development committees from the 21 Guadalcanal Wards and affiliate partners.
The USP component of the European Union-funded Intra-ACP GCCA+ Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change and Resilience Building (PACRES) programme assisted the Guadalcanal Provincial Government (GPG) in reviewing its three-year development plans in order to incorporate climate change and disaster resilience into sub-national plans.
The Guadalcanal Provincial Planning Development Committee (PPDC) recognized PACRES USP for its assistance, noting that the incorporation of climate change and disaster risk management into local development plans is frequently overlooked.
The PPDC coordinates, plans, and budgets to ensure that the 3-year rolling and annual work plans include input from GPG Members, technical experts, and other stakeholders.
The RCO for Solomon Islands, Ms. Noella Dorevella, gave a presentation during the meeting highlighting the importance of integrating Climate and Disaster Resilience into local development plans, and most importantly having a risk-informed budgetary processes that can further facilitate risk informed development.
“I must admit I have acquired a lot of valuable information from your presentations, and insights from our rural WDC Chairpersons. It was very interesting listening to them and learning of their commitments which truly benefited our rural people. Their voluntary roles are incredible” said Benjamin Afuga who was part of the training.
The one-day meeting was attended by 63 participants, 12 females and 51 males.
Among those who attended the training were the PPDC Chairpersons from the 21 Guadalcanal Wards and their Community Development Officers (CDO), representatives from the GPG, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, The USPSI, and private sector companies such as Guadalcanal Plain Palm Oil Limited and Gold Ridge.
The USP component of the EU-funded Intra-ACP GCCA+ PACRES programme is implemented in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the Pacific Community (SPC), and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), while the SUPA Project is being implemented with SPREP and SPC.
