Alumni Spotlight: Ms Qweneth Andrew

Qweneth Andrew | Vanuatu | Bachelor of Commerce (Double Major: Accounting, Management, Public Administration)

For Qweneth Andrews, the road to her degree at The University of the South Pacific (USP) was a testament to dedication and transformation. Balancing a full-time job, raising two children, and studying part-time alongside her husband, she successfully completed her Bachelor of Commerce (Double Major in Accounting, Management, and Public Administration) between 2022 and 2024 at the Emalus Campus.

“My time at USP has been both rewarding and transformative,” Qweneth shares. “Studying at USP not only equipped me with knowledge, but also built my confidence, discipline, and resilience.”

Overcoming the Challenge of the Double Duty

Qweneth’s greatest challenge was successfully balancing her work and studies with motherhood. She often waited until late at night to focus on her coursework after attending to her family.

“I am grateful to God for giving me the strength and perseverance to keep going. With His guidance, both my husband and I were able to overcome these struggles, and we are proud to have graduated together this year.”

Career and The Call to Forensic Accounting

Qweneth currently works as an Accounts Payable Officer at the Northern Island Stevedoring Company Ltd (NISCOL). Her early role as a Finance Officer instilled in her a meticulous attention to detail and a profound appreciation for integrity in financial transactions.

This ethical foundation crystallised her academic focus: the critical issue of public finance. Her research interest was highly relevant: The role of forensic accounting in detecting and preventing fraud in public institutions in Vanuatu.

A Vision for Policy and Trust

Looking ahead, Qweneth views her specialised knowledge as a tool for nation-building. She is determined to use her skills to influence policy and promote good governance in Vanuatu.

Her future goals are clear:

  • Specialisation: To specialise further in forensic accounting and fraud investigation, contributing to stronger systems of accountability in Vanuatu.
  • Influence: To become a role model for upcoming students and use her expertise to influence policies that protect public resources and promote trust in institutions.

Advice for Current Students

Qweneth emphasises that success is built on consistent effort and strong time management. She offers powerful encouragement to those just starting their journey:

“Studying is a journey that requires dedication, perseverance, and strong time management. Engage actively with your peers, seek guidance from your lecturers, and never hesitate to ask questions.”

She concludes with a spiritual reflection: “I am forever grateful to God for guiding me through this journey. It has not been easy, but the Lord has been so good to me and my family. To Him be all the glory!”

Qweneth is an alumnus of the USP School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE), and plans to remain involved with the university by sharing her career journey and pursuing further postgraduate studies.
