Library Information Research Skills (IRS) Workshop Series

Learning Objectives

  1. To facilitate information research skills acquisition.
  2. To build on the graduate attribute of information research skills for lifelong learning.
  3. To inform students of the USP Theses Guidelines prior to the commencement of thesis writing.
  4. To instruct students on how to use reference management software and citation styles.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this IRS, postgraduate students will be able to:

  1. Use print and electronic resources efficiently and effectively.
  2. Design the outline of their thesis as per USP requirements.
  3. Correctly reference and manage information resources.

8:00-8.30                              Registration

8.30-8.45                               Welcome and Introductory Remarks

8.45-9.15                               Searching the Web using Google

An overview of Google searching such as Google Web Advanced Search, Google Scholar, Google Books and Google Alerts will be provided.

9.15-9.30                               Navigating the USP Library Homepage

The participants will be shown the USP Library’s Homepage – a gateway to its wide range of collections, services, resources and facilities.

9.30-10.30                            Searching the USP Library Catalogue

Participants will be shown how to effectively use the Laucala Library Catalogue to find relevant resources by using the various search options, interpret search results, place reservations, save lists and create alerts.

10.30-10.45                          Morning Tea

10.45-11.00                          Overview of databases and articles

This component will give an overview of databases and articles, including peer-reviewed article and highly ranked journals.

11.00-12.00                          Using the Library Online Databases: Web of Science

This component will cover search options, results, citation reports, alerts and other features particular to Web of Science.

12.00-1.00                            Using the Online Databases (provided by Research Office): Scopus 

This component will cover search options, results, citation reports, alerts and other features particular to Scopus.

1.00-2.00                               Lunch

2.00-3.00                               Using the Library Online Databases: ProQuest

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval, alerts and other features particular to Proquest.

3.15-3.30                               Afternoon Tea

3.15-4.00                               Using the Library Online Databases: ebrary (ebooks database)

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval, alerts and other features particular to ebrary.

4.00-5.00                               Using APA (American Psychological Association) Referencing Style

This session will provide an overview of referencing, in particular, the components of APA referencing style.

8.30-8.45                               Review of Day 1 Sessions: Question and Answer

This component will allow students to share their personal experiences thus far with using the library resources covered on Day 1.

8.45-9.45                              Using Library Online Databases: EBSCOHost

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval, alerts and other features particular to EBSCOHost.

9.45-10.30                            Using Library Online Databases: Emerald

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval, alerts and other features particular to Emerald.

10.30-10.45                          Morning Tea

10.45-11.45                          Using Library Online Databases: World Bank eLibrary and IMF eLibrary

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval and other features particular to World Bank eLibrary and IMF eLibrary.

11.45-1.00                            Using Library Online Databases: Research4Life (AGORAHINARI and OARE)

This component will cover search options, results, full-text retrieval and other features particular to AGORA, HINARI and OARE.            

1.00-2.00                               Lunch

2.00-4.00                               Using EndNote to Manage your References

This component will introduce students to EndNote – reference management software. Participants will be shown how to add references manually, import references from numerous databases and use EndNote with Microsoft Word to create and format citations and references.

4.00-4.15                               Afternoon Tea

4.15–4.45                             USP Theses Presentation Guide

                                                   Participants will be introduced to USP These Presentation Guide.
