Message from Director Research

Welcome to the office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) at The University of the South Pacific (USP). USP is a regional University owned by 12 Pacific Island Countries, engages regionally and with Pacific communities to create more sustainable economies, environments, and social development, and works closely across its campuses and with member country governments, to help member governments achieve their sustainable development goals. We are committed to building on a dynamic research culture that empowers our students, creates new knowledge across a broad array of disciplines, helps to bring positive change leading to innovative, cohesive, resilient and sustainable communities.

USP is committed to internationally recognized research, which meets the needs and aspirations of Pacific Island Communities. USP has identified research priority areas in terms of strategic research themes that address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (2015 – 2030) underpinned by Innovation, Empowerment & Sustainability. We impress upon regional and international collaborations and partnerships, engagements with industry and government, and sharing evidence-based research.

The office for Research & Innovation is responsible for supporting and advancing an environment that fosters research, creativity and Innovation to achieve research excellence. It provides university-wide leadership and direction on research, innovation and capacity building. It ensures timely review, implementation and generation of new research policies. Its responsibilities are to administer the internal and external research scholarships, research projects, and furnish information on internal and external funding opportunities to researchers. It is also responsible for providing high-level strategic advice and analysis relating to donor relations; effective liaison and engagement with development partners; reviewing and finalization of MOUs, and Agreements with external partners; reviewing project proposals; drafting letters and presentations, reports and papers for the Vice-Chancellor & President and the University.
